Martin the Warrior is one Redwall character I feel so sorry for. Anyone
who has read Martin the Warrior will now what I mean. For those
who haven’t, I can reveal this much. The mousemaid, Laterose, was the
only mouse he ever loved. Tragically, when she went to fight in battle
with him, she was herself slain. Martin never really got over it. He
even lived out his seasons as a confirmed bachelor. I was aiming at some symbolism here: the wilted rose, representing the late Laterose and his father’s sword, which he fought to regain from his enemy, a cold replacement for his girl.
